Every other city in this catalog is drawn in towers. Washington has none at all, so the drawing is made of pediments, domes and columns, with a single upright shape in the middle of it.
What is in the drawing
A small temple front opens the left, its pediment sitting over a row of columns. Beside it a wider memorial carries a shallow dome above a second colonnade, drawn with the columns as short strokes hanging under the roofline. Then the obelisk, plain and unornamented, the one thing in the drawing that goes straight up and the only shape with no detail on it whatsoever. Past it the line stays low across flat blocks and arcaded fronts before reaching the Capitol, its dome banded and ringed with arches and finished with a small lantern, standing over a columned portico with a wing running out each side. A last domed rotunda and a long low roof carry the line off the right edge.
Who buys it
Almost everybody in Washington came from somewhere else and expected to leave sooner than they did. This one goes to the person still there after the term that brought them ended, and it reads as the city rather than as the job, which is the distinction that makes it giftable at all.
Mug or canvas
Only one drawing in the whole catalog runs wider than this. That matters twice over. On a mug it wraps a long way round, so the obelisk and the Capitol dome are almost never in view at the same moment, and turning it is part of the object. On a wall the same proportion is the whole point: it hangs as a band, and it wants a wide space above a sideboard rather than a tall one in an alcove.
