Detroit has the most ornate skyline in this catalog and the drawing does not simplify it. Where other cities get flat tops, this one gets crowns, spires and an arcade.
What is in the drawing
Plain slabs open the left before a tower with an angled crown and another finished in Art Deco steps. Then two Gothic spires rise together, thin and sharp, with a clock tower and its small spire standing behind them. The line runs almost flat along a low arcaded building, climbs a tall tower split into three pinnacles, and ends on a peaked roof with a zigzag frontage at the right edge. It is a busier drawing than most in this catalog, and the empty space above the roofline is what keeps it from crowding.
Who buys it
For people with a point to make. Detroit art is for those who were born there and stayed, or left and did not stop arguing about it, and the black mug suits the drawing better than the white one does.
Mug or canvas
The busiest drawing in the set, and one of the wider ones too, which is an awkward pair at small sizes. The Gothic spires, the clock tower and the arcade all crowd the middle third and all carry fine work. A mug gives you the silhouette, which is a good silhouette. A canvas is where the arcade resolves into separate arches.
