El Paso is drawn around a single tall rectangle with no detail on it whatsoever, and everything else in the picture is ornamented. The contrast is the composition.
What is in the drawing
The left opens on a low arcaded block and a tower with a notched crown beside it. A cupola follows under a pointed finial, then two small towers with sharp caps standing close together above a stepped base. The center is that slab: tall, plain and unbroken except for one hairline down its face, rising well clear of its neighbours. Immediately past it a small domed tower sits low, then a wide building whose roofline is drawn as a shallow scallop between two finials, carried on two deep arched bays. A low block with a small spired tower on its roof closes the right.
Who buys it
El Paso sells to a border-city buyer who is used to being left out of the range and notices when they are not. It goes to military families rotating through Bliss and to people who left for Phoenix or Austin, and it is more often a mug on a desk than a canvas on a wall.
Mug or canvas
Coverage of 0.067 makes this one of the lighter drawings in the American catalog, and the ratio of 1.975 to 1 keeps it inside the mug band with a margin either side. Nothing here depends on fine detail surviving: the slab is the subject and it is a large plain shape, so this is one of the few in the batch where the 11oz mug loses almost nothing against the largest canvas.
