Lansing is the sparsest drawing in this group by a wide margin, and that is the whole character of it. Long stretches carry nothing but a roofline, which leaves the two ornamented buildings a great deal of room.
What is in the drawing
Low flat blocks open the left along an almost unbroken base line, with a slim mast rising among them. A flat slab follows. Then the capitol: a dome on a drum with a lantern above it, standing over a low wing with a shallow pediment. A wide plain block runs on from there. The tallest thing arrives past the centre, a tower under a stepped ornamental crown finished with a finial, and a stepped block with a mast and a low block close the right.
Who buys it
Lansing sells to the state government and to the university across the river, two audiences that barely overlap and want the same drawing. It is a retirement piece more often than anything else.
Mug or canvas
Ink comes in at 0.044, which is very little for a drawing 2.268 to 1 across, so there is open air almost everywhere in it. Nothing here suffers from being reduced, so ceramic is the first choice rather than the fallback, and it does travel the whole way round. The 18 by 12 canvas is already generous.
