Tempe is bracketed by landscape. A long flat butte opens the drawing and a low rounded hill closes it, and the buildings sit between the two as though the terrain came first, which in this case it did.
What is in the drawing
The butte lies along the far left, drawn as a long low mass with a broken top edge and no height to speak of. An onion-domed turret follows, then a building with pointed arches under a stepped gable. A plain slab and a low block with a flag mast carry the line to the center, where a tented pavilion sits with its roof drawn as straight facets meeting at a point. Beyond it a peak-crowned tower, a stepped slab and a tall curved-topped tower rise in sequence, and a low rounded hill closes the right.
Who buys it
Tempe sells to students and to their parents, and the two buy in different months. It also sells to people who moved to the valley for the winters, and for them the butte is the part that matters rather than the towers.
Mug or canvas
Both landforms are pure outline with nothing inside them, which is why the ink stops at 0.047 and why the drawing is forgiving when reduced. The mug works well and takes it right round, the width being 2.592 to 1. On canvas 24 by 16 is enough for the facets of the tented roof to separate.
