Mesa is one of only two drawings in this catalog that put a cactus in the skyline, and it earns it: the desert takes the right-hand quarter and the town stops well before the edge.
What is in the drawing
A church opens the left under a steep pitched roof and a pointed steeple, its walls cut with narrow openings. A low dome follows, drawn as a fan of straight ribs meeting at the top rather than as a curve. Then the centre: a tented roof rising to a point above an arcade scalloped along its lower edge, with a gabled front and a cluster of small pinnacles standing beside it. A block ribbed with verticals carries the line right, low buildings step down after it, and the drawing finishes past a saguaro and a run of flat-topped hills.
Who buys it
Retirees and winter residents buy this, and they buy it to send east. The saguaro and the hills are doing that work rather than the temple or the towers, because they are what the recipient pictures when they hear Arizona.

The ribbed dome is the detail to think about: those ribs converge at the top and merge into a solid wedge when the drawing is small, which is the one thing 11oz gets wrong.
