Honolulu is drawn low and horizontal, the way it looks from the water rather than from inland. One mast breaks the roofline and nothing else comes close to it.

What is in the drawing

A tower with a pitched cap stands at the far left above a face scored with a jagged stroke. Beside it sits a small building under a hipped roof with three arched openings beneath. The middle of the picture is a long hall: a curved roof drawn as one soft rise, resting on a colonnade of narrow supports that runs almost a third of the width. Behind its right end a slab climbs and carries a thin mast on a collared top, standing well above everything else in the picture. A group of towers with notched crowns follows, then a domed tower over an arched base, and a plain block with a flat cap finishes the line.

Who buys it

Honolulu is almost entirely a holiday purchase, and the buyer usually wants it to look calm rather than busy, which this drawing does. It is also bought by people who were stationed there. The mug outsells the canvas on this one by a wide margin, because it is a memory somebody wants on a Tuesday morning.

Mug or canvas

At 1.881 to 1 it sits among the more compact American drawings, well inside the band a mug prints, centred with white to both sides. Coverage is 0.070. The colonnade under the long roof is the only fine detail, a row of thin uprights that thickens together at small sizes, and the mast survives at any size because it is one straight stroke with nothing near it.
