Colorado Springs is the least vertical American drawing in this catalog. There is no downtown cluster in it at all, and the two things that hold your eye are a sculpture and a castle-like roof.

What is in the drawing

A winged figure rests on a low plinth at the far left, drawn in three strokes with a round shape beside it. Next to that a long building spreads out under a broad flat roof drawn as one shallow plane, with a clock tower rising straight through it, banded twice and finished under a pointed cap. A small gabled block and a plain box follow. The center is deliberately empty, just a base line running on. The right third gathers everything else: gabled roofs, two sharp turrets standing over them, and a squared tower whose top is cut into battlements, with a peaked roof and a flagstaff closing on the edge.

Who buys it

This one is bought by Academy families and by people who retired to the front range, and both groups are buying the mountains as much as the town. It reads as a place rather than a city, which is unusual here, and that makes it work in a den or a hallway rather than an office.

Mug or canvas

At 2.484 to 1 this runs considerably wider than the mug band, so a mug carries it right around with the two ends meeting behind the handle. Coverage is light at 0.071 and the empty middle is deliberate, so a 3:2 canvas leaves real space above the roofline. Wide, low and sparse suits the mug better than any other drawing in this batch.
