Ann Arbor opens on the ground rather than in the air. The first shape is a stadium drawn as a long low oval with no height to it at all, and the line has to climb from there, which gives the drawing a rising shape most here do not have.
What is in the drawing
The stadium sits at the far left, a flattened oval scored with a zigzag along its rim. A slim steeple follows, then a hall with a crenellated top and a stepped gable. The line climbs a notched tower and reaches the tallest thing in the picture at the center, a tower narrowing to a peaked crown. A wide arena under a shallow curved roof sits beside it, low and broad. Past that a tower with a peaked crown and a rounded-top slab step down, a wide gabled block follows, and a small house with a peaked roof closes the right.
Who buys it
Ann Arbor is a graduation present and a football present, and the two buyers want the same drawing for different halves of it. It sells hardest in spring and autumn, and it is one of the few in this catalog where the stadium rather than the skyline closes the sale.
Mug or canvas
A stadium is a large simple shape and large simple shapes do not care what size they are printed at, which makes this an easy mug. Ink is a light 0.052 and the width runs 2.283 to 1, over the threshold, so it wraps. The zigzag along the stadium rim is the only fine part, and 24 by 16 on canvas is where it reads as separate marks rather than a grey line.
