New Orleans has a low skyline and two shapes everybody knows. The drawing gives both of them room instead of burying them among the office towers.
What is in the drawing
The left end is downtown, a run of slabs and a flat-capped tower with an antenna. Then the cathedral, three spires together, the tallest in the middle, sitting far lower than the buildings around it and getting the attention anyway. Past a notched tower the line lies almost flat to draw the stadium as one long roof with a peak at its center and a zigzag running along its edge. It climbs a last tall tower and ends on an obelisk standing on a stepped base at the right.
Who buys it
A trip present more often than a hometown one, and the trip is usually a specific one: a birthday somebody spent on Frenchmen Street, a first jazz festival, a wedding weekend in the Quarter.
Mug or canvas
Two shapes here want different treatment. The cathedral spires are fine and vertical and they hold at any size. The stadium is a long, low, nearly flat roof with a zigzag worked along its edge, and that zigzag is the first detail to close up. If the stadium is why you want it, the canvas is the one.
