Kansas City is tall and packed, and the structure that identifies it is not a building. A set of cable pylons stands low in front of the skyline with its stays drawn as straight rays, and no other drawing here carries anything of the sort.

What is in the drawing

A low block with four stacks on its roof opens the left. Tall slabs climb behind, one carrying a needle spire and another a shallow dish on its crown. A very tall plain slab takes the centre. In front of it the pylons: two masts on the ground line with cables running down in straight lines to a low deck between them. Low blocks with pitched and curved roofs follow, and two tall slabs close the right.

Who buys it

Kansas City has an unusually loyal diaspora and this sells to it: a leaving present, a first-apartment present, a piece somebody buys for a kitchen two states away. It also sells locally in a way most cities this size do not.

Mug or canvas

At 1.959 to 1 this falls under the 2.14 a mug wraps at, so ceramic centres it with plain space to either side and the whole drawing stays in view at once. Ink is 0.084, which is a lot for the width, because the towers are close together and the cables add fine line. That density is the argument for 30 by 20 on canvas, where the stays read as separate rays rather than a shaded triangle.
