Rochester is bracketed by two very different roofs. Twin gothic spires stand at the left and a shallow dome sits at the right, and the plain towers in between are there to hold them apart.
What is in the drawing
The twin spires open the left, narrow and close together over a low front. A tall slab follows, then a block whose whole face carries a tight zigzag. Past a further slab a tower rises under an ogee cap, curving out and back to a point. Tall slabs carry the height through the centre. The right drops into a low crenellated building with a zigzag front, and a broad shallow dome closes the line.
Who buys it
Rochester sells to people who worked for the film and optics firms and to their children, so it carries a family association more than a civic one. It is a retirement gift as often as a housewarming.
