Tokyo is drawn with both of its towers in it, which is the choice that makes this version worth having. They stand well apart and look nothing like each other.

What is in the drawing

A five-tier pagoda opens the left, then a low block and a rounded dome on an arcaded base. The tall broadcasting tower rises past them, a plain shaft with two viewing decks stacked on it and a mast above, and a slimmer crowned tower stands alongside. A long stadium dome runs low across the centre with a scalloped rim. The lattice tower follows, cross-braced through its middle and drawn to a needle. Two goblet-shaped towers come next, then twin office slabs and a small pitched roof close the right.

Who buys it

The buyer here is as often somebody who has never been, because the city is familiar from everything else they watch and read. The two towers together are what makes it unmistakably Tokyo rather than a generic Asian skyline.

Mug or canvas

There is height to spare at 1.788, well under what a ceramic print wants, so the drawing uses the whole depth. Ink at 0.082 leaves the cross-bracing on the lattice tower open rather than solid. Bracing is the size test here, and it still reads as a lattice from 24 by 16 on canvas.
