San Jose is drawn as an old Californian town that grew a downtown, and the artist has kept both halves at similar heights. The tented roofs at either end frame the towers in the middle.
What is in the drawing
A short tower with a rounded cap opens the left on a plain shaft, and beside it a pavilion spreads under a tented roof with three arched openings beneath. A second capped tower follows, then a run of slim shafts pressed together. A low rotunda sits on the base line after them, drawn as a half circle on a squared block. The center belongs to a broad tower whose crown is cut into two steps, flanked by narrow slabs with deep slots. To its right a shape rises with one curved shoulder climbing to a point, small towers at its foot. The line closes on a long hall under a wide tented roof, ribbed along its length.
Who buys it
San Jose is bought by people who work in the valley and are tired of the whole region being called San Francisco. It is a very common corporate leaving gift here, ordered in twos and threes, and the mug is what usually gets chosen for that because it goes back to a desk somewhere else.
Mug or canvas
At 2.285 to 1 it is wider than the mug band and wraps completely, and coverage of 0.079 puts it just above the middle of the American range. The two tented roofs are large simple shapes that survive anywhere, but the slim shafts on the left third are drawn close together and merge into one dark group at 11oz. If those matter, the canvas at 24 by 16 separates them.
