Hartford keeps its plain towers at the two ends and puts everything decorated in between them, so the middle of the drawing carries far more line than either side of it does.
What is in the drawing
A small block and a tall notched slab open the left above a low run of roofs. A tower with a stepped crown and a pointed cap follows. The centre is a cluster of spires, gables and finials packed close together, and a tented pavilion sits beside them with a low crenellated block scored in zigzag beneath. Past that a tower under a pointed crown rises, then the tallest slab in the drawing, and a slab with a cut top closes the right.
Who buys it
Hartford sells to the insurance trade and to people who grew up in the suburbs around it, and it is bought as a career marker as often as a hometown one. It moves best as a desk piece rather than a kitchen one.
