Richmond is the only American drawing here built around a classical temple front, and the artist has put it dead center rather than off to one side. Everything modern in the picture arranges itself around that pediment.
What is in the drawing
A plain cylinder with a flat cap opens the left, ringed near the top. Beside it a slab wears a broad overhanging cap that sits on it like a hat brim, and a slim shaft stands behind. A low pavilion with a shallow pitched roof runs along the base. Then the portico: a triangular pediment carried on five clean vertical columns, wider at the roof than the building beneath it. A gabled hall with arched openings follows immediately, and after it a narrow tower whose top is stacked into three shrinking boxes finished with a mast. The right end holds a slab scored with a zigzag, a tall tower with a sloped shoulder, and a small block closing on the base line.
Who buys it
Richmond is a state-capital purchase as much as a hometown one. It is bought by people who worked in that building or argued with it, by university families, and by anyone who wants a Virginia piece that is not Williamsburg. The portico makes it read as older than it is, which suits an office wall.
Mug or canvas
At 2.288 to 1 it is wide enough to wrap a mug completely, and coverage of 0.080 sits a little above average. What decides it is the portico. Those five columns are evenly spaced thin verticals, and at mug size they thicken toward each other and read as a single dark block, while at 24 by 16 and up they stay separate and the pediment reads as a pediment. This is the clearest canvas-over-mug case in the batch.
