Fort Lauderdale opens on water rather than on buildings. An angled deck sits low at the far left with nothing behind it, and the city arrives all at once immediately afterwards.
What is in the drawing
A low angular deck opens the left, lifting on one side the way a drawbridge does. The city starts abruptly with a stepped tower carrying small pinnacles, then a pointed roof and a run of tall slabs, two of them split at the crown and standing as the highest point. A tower with a crenellated top follows, then more slabs stepping down. A thin spire rises over a low building with a zigzag front, and that closes the right.
Who buys it
This sells to people who keep a boat there and to people who retired nearby, which makes it a Christmas piece bought from somewhere colder. The raised deck is the part that gets recognised, because everybody who lives there has waited at it.
Mug or canvas
A 2.528 to 1 frame carries the drawing right around a mug, which does put the deck and the closing spire out of sight of each other. Ink is 0.064. The pinnacles on the left-hand tower are the finest work in it and want 24 by 16 on canvas before they read as separate points.
