Amsterdam is drawn long and low, so the eye travels rather than climbs. Nothing in it reaches for height, and the windmill at the end is what most people look for first.

What is in the drawing

Canal houses begin it, their stepped gables notched against the sky above a row of narrow fronts. Turrets and a small steeple interrupt them. A church with two tall spires takes the middle distance, and beside it a gable rises into a crown of five points. A long warehouse front runs flat and low. Then the roof of a modern hall flares wide over an arch, another peak follows, and the sails of a windmill fill the last stretch of the line.

Who buys it

Weekends away built this audience. People go once, walk the canal ring, and come home with nothing to show for it, which is where a mug on a desk does its work. The windmill also makes it legible to somebody who has never been.

Mug or canvas

At 2.655 this is well past the 2.143 band a mug prints in, so ceramic scales it by width and the drawing sits shallower in the wrap. Coverage is 0.119, thin enough that the gable notches stay separate rather than closing up. The windmill is the detail that suffers on an 11oz, and the 18 by 12 canvas keeps it.
