Tampa is one of the more compact American drawings in the catalog and it is packed accordingly. Nine towers stand shoulder to shoulder with almost no low ground between them.
What is in the drawing
The line starts on a low block that carries a small tower above it, stepped inward twice and finished with a short point. Behind that come slabs with softly rounded shoulders, then a narrow box, then a tower under a clean pyramid cap. A slim slab divides the picture at the middle. From there the tallest shapes take over: a broad tower with a crown cut into two steps, another beside it capped in a sharp point, and past them a wide tower whose top curves over in one continuous arc. The last shape on the right is a plain rectangle with nothing on it at all, which is what stops the crowded left side from running off the edge.
Who buys it
Tampa is a moving-away present and a snowbird present in roughly equal measure. It goes north with somebody who spent three winters there, and it goes to the grandparents who did the reverse. Because the drawing is narrow it hangs well in a hallway or beside a door, which is where most of these end up.
Mug or canvas
At 1.840 to 1 this is one of the squarer drawings here, well short of what a mug wraps, so it prints centred with clear white on both sides. Coverage is 0.086, in the inkiest quarter of the American catalog, and it is spread evenly across the whole width. Dense and compact is the combination that suits a canvas: it fills a 3:2 frame far better than a wide panorama would, with the ink reaching close to all four edges.
