Springfield has the thinnest tower in this catalog. It is drawn as little more than two parallel lines running most of the height of the picture, and the effect is that the rest of the city reads as low even where it is not.
What is in the drawing
A bridge opens the left on three shallow arches with piers standing in the water beneath it. A low block follows, and then the campanile: a needle-thin shaft rising well clear of its neighbours and finished with a small point. The line drops to a rounded-top block, climbs a stepped one, and reaches the tallest flat-topped tower at the center. Past that a tower with an arched crown and a small pointed spire follow, and a low run of blocks with a stepped end closes the right.
Who buys it
Springfield sells locally and to people who moved away from the Connecticut valley, and the bridge does as much of that work as the tower. There is another Springfield in this country that people will ask about, which is worth knowing before it is given as a gift.
Mug or canvas
Two numbers matter here and they pull the same way. Ink is 0.055, light, and the proportion is 2.649 to 1, wide. Light and wide is the pairing that holds up best when a drawing is shrunk, so the mug does well despite wrapping the whole way round. The campanile is the exception: it is two lines close together, and below 24 by 16 on canvas they begin to merge into one.
