Providence gives almost a third of its width to one low curved roof before a single tower appears, which is unusual here and is what makes the drawing recognisable.
What is in the drawing
The line opens on a long vaulted hall lying low along the base, its curved roof drawn twice and its underside scalloped into a run of shallow arches. A block with a flat projecting canopy follows and lifts the roofline for the first time. From there the buildings climb through stepped crowns and squared shoulders toward the middle, where a tower carries a slim spire above a cap tiered in three stages. Beside it stands the tallest thing in the picture, a plain slab rising to a flat top with no ornament whatever. The right falls away through a pavilion under a rounded dome and closes on a building with a sharp gable.
Who buys it
Graduation drives this one. Students buy it and so do their parents, and both want the tiered tower because that is the shape on every postcard. The vaulted hall means less to them and is the reason the drawing does not look like everywhere else.
Mug or canvas
Measured at 2.276 to 1 it overruns the mug band, so the wrap carries the vaulted hall around toward the handle. Coverage is 0.055, on the sparse side, which helps at small sizes. The real argument for a canvas here is the left third: the arches under that roof are fine work and they are the first thing to disappear when the drawing is shrunk. At 30 by 20 you can count them.
