Madison puts its dome at the center and then does something none of the other capitol drawings here do: it runs a long low tented roof out to one side, so the building has a horizon rather than a crowd.
What is in the drawing
A small pinnacled crown starts the line low on the left, dwarfed by two tall slabs behind it that are ruled with close vertical strokes. The dome fills the middle, its lantern and fine finial lifting off a ribbed drum that sits on a wide colonnaded base, with the columns drawn as a row of short verticals. To the right of it the roofline drops into a long pavilion tented into a shallow peak and carried on thin supports, running most of the remaining width. A tower under a pointed cap and a slim slab flying a mast close the line.
Who buys it
This is a university town and the drawing sells like one, in May and June and again in December. Alumni want the dome. Locals want the pavilion, because it is the lake end of town and it is the half that visitors never think to ask about.
Mug or canvas
The drawing measures 2.076 to 1, a little tighter than the 2.143 a mug prints, which leaves a narrow margin at each end instead of a full wrap. Coverage of 0.062 is moderate but front-loaded: the colonnade under the dome is the densest passage in the drawing and it is made of thin parallel strokes, which is exactly the pattern that turns into a grey smear when reduced. Go large if the columns matter to you.
