Most San Francisco art is the bridge and nothing else. This drawing puts the bridge in the middle of the city it belongs to and gives the two ends of the line something to do.

What is in the drawing

A low peaked building with arched openings holds the left end, then a stout tower banded with two ellipses, then the pyramid, unmistakable, its triangle running up to a fine spire. A tall plain slab stands beside it. The line drops to the water and draws the Golden Gate as two towers and one long swept cable, comes up through a twin-slab high-rise, and finishes on a dome sitting above a colonnade with a low scalloped frontage running out to the edge.

Who buys it

Almost always bought by somebody who does not live there any more. The city has a high turnover of people who meant to stay, and this is the version of it they want on a wall: the shape, not the rent.

Mug or canvas

The bridge is the reason to go large. Its span is a single swept cable across the middle of the drawing, and a curve is the first thing to flatten out when a picture is small. A mug carries the pyramid and the dome perfectly well. At 24 by 16 and up, that cable stops reading as a line and starts reading as a bridge.
