Raleigh opens with something no other drawing in this catalog does: a plain dome sitting flat on the ground line, with no building underneath it. The rest of the city stands up normally behind it.
What is in the drawing
That dome takes the far left, a single shallow curve with a second stroke inside it, touching the base line at both ends. Next comes a short tower whose crown is cut into a soft scalloped shape, and then the picture rises hard into a tall slab divided by three deep vertical slots that run most of its height. A squat block follows, then a small pavilion at the center with a pitched roof and a run of arched openings under it, drawn with a finial on the ridge. Past a plain low box the roofline climbs again into a tower with a notched crown, a narrow slab, and a shaft finished in a long point. The right end gathers a gabled hall with arched windows and a last tower under a steep pointed cap.
Who buys it
Raleigh sells to people who moved for a job in the last fifteen years and are surprised to have stayed, and to graduating students whose parents want something that is not branded merchandise. It is a first-apartment present more than a retirement one, which pushes the smaller canvas and the mug ahead of the big sizes.
Mug or canvas
This is a wide drawing at 2.297 to 1, past the width a mug prints flat, so the wrap carries all the way round and the far ends meet behind the handle. Coverage is 0.076, about average, but the ink is bunched at the two ends with the low pavilion leaving the middle open. That gap is what makes it work large: on a canvas the dome at one end and the spire at the other read as bookends rather than as clutter.
