Amarillo opens on a shape that is not a building. A slim mast stands on a wide flared canopy at the far left with clear air around it, and the city proper does not begin until a third of the way across.

What is in the drawing

The canopy comes first, a broad flat cone spreading from the foot of a thin mast, sitting on a low base. A curling sculptural form stands beside it, drawn as a single looping stroke. Then the city: a twin-shafted tower whose crown splits down the middle, a wide block with its base scalloped into shallow arches, and a low cluster of pitched roofs. Tall plain slabs carry the right, one stepped and one flat, and a long low colonnade of four bays closes the line.

Who buys it

Amarillo sells to people who drove the old road and to people who live along it, and the canopy at the left is doing most of that work. It moves as a road-trip piece, which makes it one of the few here bought by somebody who spent an afternoon in the city rather than a life in it.

Mug or canvas

2.174 to 1 sits a fraction over the 2.14 threshold, enough to take the drawing around a mug with very little to spare. Ink is a light 0.050. The canopy and the mast are big uncomplicated forms that hold together however small they are printed, so ceramic is a genuine recommendation, and even the 18 by 12 canvas carries the scalloped base.
