Montgomery puts one building at the center and arranges everything else as a frame for it. The capitol is drawn with its portico rather than as a silhouette, which is rare in this range and is the reason the middle of the picture holds more ink than either end.
What is in the drawing
A tower under a capped crown opens the far left, standing on a plain shaft. A slab with a rounded top and a broad flat block follow, with a short zigzag scored between them. Past a rounded tower and a crenellated one the center arrives: a dome on a drum, sitting over a long colonnade drawn as a row of separate columns under a flat entablature. A small spired tower stands beside it. A tall notched slab rises to the right, and a slab with rounded corners closes the line.
Who buys it
Montgomery sells to people connected to the state government and to people who grew up there, and it is bought as a piece about the building rather than about the city. That makes the canvas the more common choice, because a colonnade is something a buyer wants to be able to look at.
Mug or canvas
The colonnade decides the format. Its columns are evenly spaced thin verticals, and that is the pattern that fills in and turns into a solid band before anything else does. 24 by 16 keeps them apart and 30 by 20 makes them plain. Ink totals 0.064, and at 2.409 to 1 a mug will take the drawing the whole way round.
