Houston has no single shape that stands for the whole city, so the drawing works by contrast instead. Flat glass towers hold the outer edges and everything ornamental is gathered into the middle.
What is in the drawing
A notched crown opens the left, then two plain towers, then a taller one finished with a pitched cap. The line reaches its first dome next, a ribbed cap with a finial standing on a square colonnaded base, raised clear of the ground on a plinth. Immediately past it a cluster of sharp spires rises together, the thinnest marks in the drawing. Low buildings carry the line along, and a second dome appears, smaller and tented, over a front lined with short columns. To the right the towers return as a tiered stack, three stepped blocks with a cap on top and a scalloped base beneath, and the drawing finishes on an angled slab and one bare rectangle.
Who buys it
Houston is a working city and the people who buy this tend to have arrived for a job in energy or medicine and stayed for a decade without ever quite deciding to. It goes to somebody whose family is spread across the state, which is why the 15oz is the size that moves.
Mug or canvas
The two domes and the spire cluster all sit in the middle third, and they carry almost all of the fine work in the picture. That is unusual and it decides the answer. A mug puts the middle of the drawing directly in front of you as you hold it, so the domes and spires are what you see, and this drawing is compact enough not to lose its ends to the wrap. Go large and the spire cluster resolves from a thicket into separate pinnacles.
