Boulder runs 3.043 to 1, the broadest proportion of any American drawing here, and a terrace: a single long horizontal running under the middle of the picture with the town stacked behind it. Nothing else here is proportioned like it.

What is in the drawing

Two slim slabs open the left beside a small stepped block and a narrow tower. Below and in front of them a long low terrace begins, drawn as one unbroken horizontal with a small block sitting on its roof, and it runs most of the way to the center. Behind it a stepped block with a peaked shoulder rises, then a cluster of pointed roofs and a stepped tower. A jagged run of gables follows with a small onion-domed tower among them, and a hall with three tall arched windows closes the right beside a flat-topped slab.

Who buys it

Boulder sells to people who moved away and still describe it as home, and to graduates. It is bought as a canvas more often than most cities this size, because the proportion suits a wall above a desk or a bed, which is exactly where a very wide drawing wants to go.

Mug or canvas

That 3.043 to 1 proportion has a consequence worth stating plainly: on a mug the drawing reads as a shallow stripe with generous space above and below it rather than filling the height. Some buyers prefer that and some do not. Ink is 0.062. On a wall the 36 by 24 is the size this shape was made for.
