Iowa City is the least vertical drawing in this group. Nothing in it reaches far, the buildings sit in a row at much the same height, and the dome in the middle is allowed to be the tallest thing by a comfortable margin.
What is in the drawing
A low block opens the left, then a slim spire standing over a rounded arch. A stepped block with a small penthouse follows, and a building with a pointed cupola between two gabled wings. The centre is the old capitol, a dome on a drum under a lantern and a fine point, and beside it a wide hipped roof spreads over a low hall. A tall flat block, a mushroom-shaped canopy and a low dome close the right.
Who buys it
A university town sells like one: this moves in May and again in December, and the buyers are parents as often as students. The writing programme brings a second audience who want the town rather than the campus, and the dome serves both.
Mug or canvas
Ink is 0.056, light, across a frame of 2.412 to 1, so ceramic carries the whole drawing round with open air to spare. Light and long is the easiest combination to print small, so ceramic loses very little here. The lantern above the dome is the only fine passage, and 18 by 12 already holds it.
