Cincinnati gives the drawing one genuinely odd shape to work with, a tower that narrows in stages like a stack of rings, and the line makes it the center of everything. The rest of the skyline is arranged around it.
What is in the drawing
A long hall runs low across the left under a shallow arch, its front filled with a row of loops. A narrow tower with a stepped crown stands behind it on two thin legs. The center belongs to a broad flat tower with an arch drawn across its top, and immediately beside it the tapered tower climbs through three banded rings to a blunt point. From there the roofline drops to a block with long vertical waves, lifts again into a tower with a rounded cap and a thin mast, and steps through a notched shaft before closing on a low building with pointed turrets at either end.
Mug or canvas
Falls just inside the mug's band and sits as a centred panel with a narrow margin to each side. The line is heavy and concentrated in the middle third, where the banded tower and the arched hall both sit, which makes the mug read well from the front. On canvas the extra height suits the tapered tower, the tallest thing in the picture and the shape the drawing is really about.
