Spokane is built around its river crossing. The bridge sits low in the middle of the drawing with the city standing back behind it, which is the reverse of how most of these are composed.

What is in the drawing

A battlemented block opens the left with a thin pinnacle rising from it, and a small tower under a pointed cap stands alongside. The bridge then crosses the middle ground on three round arches springing from the base line, drawn with a parapet running flat above them. A tall notched slab ribbed with vertical bands stands directly behind it, the highest point in the picture. Two pavilions with steep pointed roofs follow, then a low block fronted with round arches, and the right finishes on a long hall under a pitched roof with an arcade beneath.

Who buys it

This is an Inland Northwest piece and it does not travel much beyond it. It sells to people who grew up on one side of the river or the other, and the arches are the thing they recognise from a distance.

Mug or canvas

The width comes to 2.510 to 1, well beyond the mug band, so the drawing circles a mug with the two ends out of sight of each other. Coverage of 0.060 sits in the middle. The three arches are the reason to consider going large: they are drawn as clean open curves with the parapet line above them, and that gap between line and curve is the first thing lost when the piece is reduced.
