Abu Dhabi has a building shaped like a coin standing on its edge, and the artist has filled the circle with a loose tangle of loops rather than windows. Nothing else in the drawing is round.
What is in the drawing
A low mosque opens the far left, a shallow dome above an arcade scalloped along its front. The circular tower follows, its outline clean and its interior a knot of overlapping loops, with a curved tower leaning away from it. A run of narrow slabs rises past that, close together and unequal in height. A minaret stands beyond them, then a mosque with three onion domes between two more minarets. A long crenellated fort wall closes the right.
Who buys it
Expatriate contracts account for most of these, and they travel in both directions: out to the families left behind, and home again at the end of a posting. Desk pieces rather than kitchen ones.
Mug or canvas
The frame runs 2.165 to 1, just past the point where ceramic wraps, so the circle and the fort finish on opposite faces. Ink is 0.079, heavy, and the tangle inside the circle holds most of it. That tangle is a knot of fine crossings and it fills into a dark disc at small sizes, so give it 30 by 20 on canvas if it is the reason for buying.
