Asheville carries more ornament per inch than anything else in this batch. Almost nothing in it is finished flat, and the arcade across the middle repeats a pointed gable so many times that it reads as texture rather than as buildings.

What is in the drawing

A stepped tower opens the left. Two towers with onion caps stand beside it, one behind the other, and a small dome sits between their feet with an ornate turret past them. The center is a long arcaded hall whose roofline is a run of pointed gables drawn one after another at even spacing. A gothic tower crowded with pinnacles rises behind that, and a slim obelisk stands clear of everything with nothing near its height. To the right a block cut with a grid of windows and a low arched roof follow, and a plain flat-topped slab closes the line.

Who buys it

Asheville is a holiday piece. It sells to people who went for a weekend and to people who retired there, and it moves in autumn more than at any other time. It is one of the few American drawings here bought mostly by visitors rather than by residents.

Mug or canvas

Ink runs to 0.076 here, and every bit of that weight is in the gables and the pinnacles. Dense plus detailed is the combination that punishes small print hardest, so treat 30 by 20 as the starting size and 36 by 24 as the one that keeps each gable its own shape. A 2.561 to 1 proportion puts it well past the wrapping threshold on ceramic.
