Munich packs itself into a narrow shape, so this is one of the taller compositions in the range. The pair of domes at the right end is the part that does the recognising.
What is in the drawing
A gabled hall opens the line, arches running along its base under two pointed roofs. A slab rises behind. The town hall spire climbs next, thin and detailed. A tented roof follows, scalloped along its lower edge. The Olympic tower stands at the centre as a fine needle with a band near the top. An onion-domed church sits beside it, and the Frauenkirche closes the right, two towers under rounded caps against a tall block.
Who buys it
Oktoberfest accounts for a large share of visits and almost none of the photographs people keep. The domes give them the city instead of the tent. Exchange students and BMW postings make up much of the rest.
Mug or canvas
The Olympic needle is the thinnest stroke anywhere in this drawing, and it decides which size to buy. Coverage 0.125 is light, which helps, but on an 11oz that needle thins out against the glaze. A 15oz carries it. Nothing has to be scaled by width at 1.770, so the towers keep their full height, and all four canvas sizes are comfortable.
