Memphis hands the drawing two shapes no other city can offer, and they sit side by side. A long arena under a zigzag arch, and then a pyramid, drawn in almost nothing.
What is in the drawing
The arena opens the left, a long low building whose roof is a shallow arch filled with a run of sharp zigzags. A plain upright block separates it from the pyramid, which is given three clean strokes and a low entrance drawn across its base. From there the line climbs into the tallest part of the picture: two towers finished in long spires, then a stalk carrying a bulbous cap, and a flat slab beside them. The right end drops to low buildings with scalloped fronts and closes on a pair of plain towers.
Who buys it
Memphis is a music gift as often as a city gift, and the drawing does not lean on that at all. The pyramid and the arena carry it instead, which makes it land better with somebody from the city than another guitar would.
Mug or canvas
At 2.29 to 1 and under a tenth of the frame inked, it wraps the mug completely while staying open and uncrowded the whole way round. It is the easiest of this batch to read at small size, because the two shapes that matter are large, simple and far apart. On canvas the same openness means plenty of white around the pyramid, which either suits the room or does not, and is worth picturing before choosing the largest size.
