Edinburgh is drawn as one long ridge of stone with almost no gap in it, and the skyline is made of pinnacles rather than roofs. There is nothing modern in it at all.
What is in the drawing
A monument opens the left, an open arched tower under a sharp cap on a stepped base. Gothic fronts follow, crowded with pinnacles and pierced by one tall arched window. A tower with a crowned top rises past them. A long low wall runs on, arcaded along its foot, then a further group of pinnacles. A domed building with a lantern and a smaller dome closes the right above an arcade.
Who buys it
This sells to festival visitors, to graduates and to Scots abroad, and each of those groups points at a different part of the ridge. It is one of the better sellers as a large canvas.
Mug or canvas
Pinnacles are the whole difficulty here: dozens of narrow uprights along the entire ridge, pushing coverage to 0.084. A shape of 2.614 sends it round a mug, where the ridge reads as a serrated edge. At 30 by 20 it turns back into stone.
