Tucson is the only American drawing here that opens on an ordinary house. The artist has put a simple gabled roof at the far left where every other city in the range starts with something tall.

What is in the drawing

That house comes first, a plain rectangle under a pitched roof sitting flat on the base line. A church tower with a pointed steeple rises beside it, then a small dome on a low block. Two cylinders climb next, one short and one taller, each with a flat cap and a scalloped foot. At the center a broad tower carries a rounded dome above a squared body, with an arcaded block beneath it. Past that sits a domed pavilion, then a long hall under a single sloped roof. The right end holds a plain cylinder and two towers with pointed caps standing over a wide arched base.

Who buys it

Tucson sells to snowbirds and to university families, and to a steady trickle of people who did a degree there thirty years ago. Buyers want it to look like the desert rather than like a downtown, and the low domes and the house at the end are what make it read that way.

Mug or canvas

The ratio is 2.219 to 1, just past the mug band, so the wrap goes the full way round with a little to spare. Coverage is 0.070, on the lighter side, and the shapes are large and well separated with real gaps between them. That combination is forgiving at every size, so this is a drawing where the format is a matter of where it is going rather than of what survives.
