This is downtown rather than the version of Los Angeles that gets put on a poster. It is also the emptiest drawing in the catalog, built from six shapes with real distance between them.
What is in the drawing
Curved panels lean across each other at the far left, overlapping like plates set on edge, with a smaller curl of the same shape below. Beside them a form rises to two upswept points above a squared base with an opening cut under it. Then the tallest tower, flat across the top with a notch taken out of the middle and long strokes running the full drop of its face. A rounded slab and a plain rectangle follow, drawn with almost no detail at all. Near the right the line builds a stepped tower to a blunt point, sitting on a tiered base with a wing each side and a scalloped arcade along the bottom. A wide shell roof, low and curved and open at the front, closes the drawing.
Who buys it
The people who buy this are the ones who live in the actual city rather than the idea of it. It is the downtown they drive into, not the sign on the hill, and that distinction is the entire appeal for somebody who has answered the question about the sign too many times. There is a separate Hollywood drawing for anybody who wants the other version.

No drawing in the catalog uses less ink than this one. Under twelve percent of its box carries any line at all, and the shapes are big, curved and far apart. That is a picture built for size. The panels at the left and the shell at the right are long smooth sweeps, and smooth sweeps are what suffer most from being shrunk. Small, it stays perfectly legible because there is nothing fine to lose. Large, the curves are the whole point.
