Newark opens on a cathedral and closes on a modern hall, and the two ends of the drawing look like they belong to different centuries. That contrast is the piece.

What is in the drawing

Two pointed spires rise together at the far left over a gabled front, with low blocks stepping away beneath them. Slabs scored with vertical bands climb from there toward the middle, gaining height in stages rather than all at once. A cylinder under a rounded cap stands among them at the center, wider than its neighbours and the only curved top in the picture. Past it the line drops sharply to a long low building whose roofline runs in a shallow wave beneath a flat canopy carried on thin posts. The right end lifts again into a tower with a pointed cap and finishes on two plain slabs standing side by side.

Who buys it

Newark is a pride purchase and it is bought defensively. The people who want it are the ones who are tired of the airport being the only thing anybody names, and the cathedral is the answer they reach for. It sells to families rather than to tourists, and the larger canvas suits that.

Mug or canvas

At 1.993 to 1 this sits comfortably under the mug band with margin at both ends, and coverage of 0.061 is mid-table. It is one of the more forgiving drawings in the range at small sizes, because its three memorable shapes are widely spaced: the spires, the round cap and the wave are each surrounded by air rather than crowded. The mug works here. The canvas simply makes the wave legible as a wave.
