Pittsburgh is a city of steeples that never got built over, and the drawing keeps them at full height instead of tucking them under the glass. Four separate pointed tops share the line with the slabs.

What is in the drawing

The far left is a church, drawn as a square tower under a steep spire with two arched windows cut into its face and a pointed door below. Two tall slabs rise immediately behind it, then a third tower finished with a crown of short square teeth. The middle of the picture drops away to a low dome, wide and shallow, its front scalloped in a row of small peaks that runs the whole width of it. Two thin steeples stand up together on the far side of that dome, sharp and unadorned. A long hall follows on an arcade of round arches, and beyond it another spire and a group of small gabled roofs. The line finishes on a broad tower whose top is cut into a deep step, with a low block tucked at its foot.

Who buys it

Pittsburgh is bought by people who left for work and did not stop calling it home, which is most of the diaspora this city has, and by parents of students. The steeples do a lot of work here: somebody who grew up in one of those parishes recognises the shape before they read the name, and that is the moment that sells the canvas rather than the mug.

Mug or canvas

Coverage of 0.085 puts this in the inkiest third of the American catalog, and it is spent almost entirely upward: four spires and a crenellated crown mean the top edge of the drawing is busy where most skylines here go quiet. Small, those points merge into the towers behind them. The ratio is 2.095 to 1, a fraction under the band a mug prints in, so the wrap stops just short of meeting itself. The spires are the argument for the canvas, because height is where this drawing spends its detail.
