Newcastle starts on the river. A bridge arches low across the far left with its hangers hatched in below the curve, and a castle keep stands immediately behind it.
What is in the drawing
The arch springs from two squat piers, its span drawn as one bow with short strokes filling the gap beneath. The keep follows, crenellated along the top with a turret at one corner. A tower under a pointed cap rises past it. A church tower with a spire stands at the centre. The right fills with close-packed blocks, a pediment on columns among them, stepping down to the edge.
Who buys it
Leaving for London produces one buyer, staying on after university produces another, and the bridge does most of the work either way. More often a leaving present than a homecoming one.
