Hampton carries two shapes that are hard to mistake for anything else. One is a water tower balanced on a single stem. The other is a building drawn as a pair of tall curves meeting at a point.
What is in the drawing
A small tower and a gabled block start the left. Past them the water tower stands on its own, a wide drum resting on one narrow stem with clear air either side. A zigzag ramp runs low along the ground through the middle, and behind it the curved building swells out in two lobes that meet at a fine point. Pinnacles, a low dome and a long scalloped front finish the right.
Who buys it
Hampton sells to service families and to people who grew up on the peninsula, so it travels a long way from where it was made. It is bought as a leaving present more often than a homecoming one.
Mug or canvas
Ink of 0.058 is moderate, and a frame of 2.487 to 1 is past the point where ceramic wraps, which leaves the water tower and the curved building facing away from one another. The zigzag ramp is the finest passage and the one that thickens soonest. Give it 24 by 16 on a wall and those strokes stay apart.
