Indianapolis is bracketed. A single slim column stands at the far left and a domed building closes the far right, and everything the city is known for happens between those two points.

What is in the drawing

The line opens on a tall thin monument column, stepped at its base and finished in a fine point. A long arcaded building runs beside it, its front a row of loops, and a tower with a battlemented top rises behind. The center is the tallest thing here: a tower crowned with twin spikes, standing next to a broad flat-topped slab with rounded corners and splayed feet. A low hall with a shallow arch follows, then a tower finished in a row of sharp points, and the drawing closes on a domed building with a small lantern above a wide arcade.

Who buys it

Indianapolis is bought by people who live there and are quietly annoyed the city gets reduced to one weekend in May. The drawing has no racetrack in it, which is the point, and that makes it a better gift than the obvious one.

Mug or canvas

Because the drawing measures 2.27 against a cup that shows less, the monument column and the dome end up on opposite sides rather than both facing you at once. Coverage is average for this batch. The composition is unusually even, four tall things spaced across the width with low building between them, so it holds together at any size. If you want both bracketing shapes visible at once, the canvas is the format that shows them together.
